MoD paying out £2.8m to abused Iraqis - Home News, UK - The Independent
Written by Editors on July 10, 2008 – 11:04 pmSettlement has been reached this afternoon for the sum of £2.83 million in relation to the Iraqi claims by the family of Baha Mousa who was murdered by British troops in September 2003 in Basra and in relation to the torture and abuse of nine other Iraqis.
The Ministry of Defence has agreed to pay almost £3 million to the family of an Iraqi who died while being detained by UK troops and nine other men who were allegedly mistreated, their solicitors said today.
The family of Baha Mousa and the nine other men will share £2.83 million in compensation from the MoD, law firm Leigh Day & Co said.
Mr Mousa, a 26-year-old hotel receptionist, died while he was being detained by soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Queen’s Lancashire Regiment in Basra in 2003.
Mr Mousa sustained 93 separate injuries, including fractured ribs and a broken nose.
During the mediation session General Freddie Viggers also apologised to the families for “the appalling behaviour of British soldiers” which had left the Army “disgusted”, the law firm said in a statement.
It read: “Settlement has been reached this afternoon for the sum of £2.83 million in relation to the Iraqi claims by the family of Baha Mousa who was murdered by British troops in September 2003 in Basra and in relation to the torture and abuse of nine other Iraqis.

The Attack On The Ambulance At Touz Khourmatou May 25th 2008 (Photo Report)

The bomb was planted beside the road near the checkpoint about 25 kilometres southwest of Kirkuk. It was carrying two people who had been wounded in a separate blast.

The bomb was detonated by radio control, the blast wounded the ambulance driver and a member of the FPS was slightly injured the photo shows part of the result the shrapnel from the bomb slicing through the ambulance. Most of the shrapnel went through the area where the patients lie.

مقتل صحافيين عراقيين في حادثين منفصلين الاربعاء
Written by Editors on May 22, 2008 – 4:52 pm- بغداد (ا ف ب) - اعلنت مصادر امنية واخرى اعلامية عراقية الخميس مقتل صحافيين عراقيين في حادثين منفصلين الاربعاء احدهما في بغداد والاخر في بعقوبة شمال شرق العاصمة.
وقال مصدر امني رفض الكشف عن اسمه ان “قوة مشتركة من الشرطة وعناصر الصحوة عثروا على جثة الصحافي حيدر هاشم الحسيني مراسل جريدة الشرق” في محافظة ديالى.
واوضح المصدر ان “الصحافي خطف الثلاثاء في حي التحرير وسط بعقوبة كبرى مدن ديالى وعثر على جثته امس مع عشر جثث مجهولة الهوية في احد البساتين في العبارة جنوب بهرز”.
واضاف ان “ثماني جثث قتل اصحابها قبل فترة طويلة”.
ويسيطر تنظيم القاعدة على ناحية العبارة.

برلماني: الكتلة الصدرية تتبنى دعاوى ضد رئيس الوزراء وقائد عمليات بغداد
Written by Editors on May 5, 2008 – 7:18 amكشف نائب عن الكتلة الصدرية في مجلس النواب، الاحد، ان الكتلة ستتبنى حملة دعاوى قانونية لضحايا العمليات العسكرية والمتضررين من جراءها ضد رئيس الوزراء نوري المالكي وقائد عمليات بغداد الفريق عبود كنبر وضباط اخرين، واتهامهم بارتكاب “جرائم ضد الانسانية”.
وقال صالح العكيلي، للوكالة المستقلة للانباء (اصوات العراق) ان الكتلة الصدرية “ستعلن تبنيها لحملة دعاوى قانونية لضحايا العمليات العسكرية والمتضررين من جراءها، ضد رئيس الوزراء وقائد عمليات بغداد الفريق عبود كنبر والضباط الاخرين واتهامهم بارتكاب جرائم ضد الانسانية “.
وكان النائب عن التيار الصدري فلاح شنشل،لـ(اصوات العراق) في وقت سابق، إن اكثر من 400 مدني قتلوا وأصيب 1720 آخرون بينهم نساء وأطفال، منذ اندلاع الاشتباكات المسلحة في مدينة الصدر شرقي بغداد أواخر شهر آذار مارس الماضي.
وشهدت مدينة الصدر مواجهات دامية في الأسبوع الأخير من آذار الماضي بين القوات الأمنية ومجموعات مسلحة تابعة لجيش المهدي التابع للتيار الصدري الذي يتزعمه الزعيم الشيعي مقتدى الصدر تزامنت مع الاشتباكات التي وقعت في البصرة عقب انطلاق خطة (صولة الفرسان) في الـ(25) من اذار الماضي.
ولم يشر العكيلي الى موعد اطلاق الحملة، لكنه قال ان الحملة ستتضمن “الاعلان عن موقع الكتروني لتلقي طلبات تقديم الدعاوى القانونية التي سيتكفل فريق من المحامين بمتابعتها، وصولا الى انصاف المظلومين من العراقيين.” مشيرا الى ان الموقع سيحمل اسم “انتهاكات”.
وتابع العكيلي قائلا ان الحكومة العراقية “ترفض كل الحلول السلمية وتختار الحل العسكري، فبعد ان فشلت في تحشيد اهالي مدينة الصدر من شيوخ عشائر ورجال دين لصالحها، شرعت الان بالتضييق على اهالي مدينة الصدر واجبارهم على النزوح خارج المدينة.” متهما الحكومة بانها “تعد العدة الان لانشاء مخيمات للنازحين، مع استمرار القصف الجوي الذي اكدت حتى قوات الاحتلال انه موجه ضد المدنيين” بحسب العكيلي.
وعلى صعيد ذي صلة، كشف العكيلي عن ان “ثلاثين شخصية عشائرية من الرمادي والفلوجة وبعقوبة والخالدية وتكريت، سيتوجهون صباح يوم غد الاثنين الى مكتب الشهيد الصدر في بغداد، لاطلاق مبادرة لوقف نزيف الدم العراقي.”
واضاف أن “اعضاء من الكتلة الصدرية وادارة مكتب السيد الشهيد الصدر في المدينة، ووجهاء ورؤساء عشائر مدينة الصدر، سيكونون باستقبال هذه الشخصيات العشائرية.”
وكان عدد من اعضاء مجلس النواب من مختلف الكتل السياسية قد نفذوا اعتصاما يوم الاحد الماضي بمدينة الصدر، مطالبين بفك الحصار وايقاف العمليات العسكرية على المدينة.

Tribal leaders from Ramadi, Fallujah, Baqubah, Tikrit and Khalid, will go Monday morning Monday to the Office of martyr al-Sadr in Baghdad, to launch an initiative to end the shedding of Iraki blood.
Members of the Sadrist bloc and the Sadrist office in Baghdad together with dignitaries and tribal leaders from Sadr City, people will be receiving the delegation.

Scenes From An Iraki Childhood May 1st 2008 Field Of Wild Roses

Her name is Nesrin which means “A field of wild roses”. Nesrin is twelve years old. She was wounded by shrapnel during the fighting today in the American assault on Sadr city. Her father and brother were killed by the shrapnel. The man on the ground is her uncle. The photo was taken at Sadr City hospital by Ahmad al-Rubaye for AFP.
