IRAQ: Journalist Charges Censorship by U.S. Military in Fallujah
Written by Editors on July 4, 2008 – 7:16 amSAN FRANCISCO, Jul 3 (IPS) - U.S. journalist Zoriah Miller says he was censored by the U.S. military in the Iraqi city of Fallujah after photographing Marines who died in a suicide bombing.

On Jun. 26, a suicide bomber attacked a city council meeting in Fallujah, 69 kms west of Baghdad, between local tribal sheikhs and military officials.
Three Marines, Cpl. Marcus Preudhomme, Capt. Philip Dykeman, and Lt. Col. Max Galeai, were assigned to 2d Battalion, 3d Marines, 3rd Marine Division, Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
The explosion also killed two interpreters and 20 Iraqis, including the mayor of the nearby town of Karmah, two prominent sheikhs and their sons, and another sheikh and his brother. All were members of the local “awakening council,” one of the U.S.-backed militias that have taken up arms against al Qaeda in Iraq, according to U.S. and Iraqi authorities.

Snapshots of life in Baghdad - Robert Fisk

Four million of Iraq’s 23 million people have fled their homes – until recently, at the rate of 60,000 a month – allegedly more than 1.2 million to Syria (a figure now challenged by at least one prominent NGO), 500,000 to Jordan, 200,000 to the Gulf, 70,000 to Egypt, 57,000 to Iran, up to 40,000 to Lebanon, 10,000 to Turkey. Sweden has accepted 9,000, Germany fewer – where an outrageous political debate has suggested that Christian refugees should have preference over Muslim Iraqis. With its usual magnanimity – especially for a country that set off this hell-disaster by its illegal invasion – George Bush’s America has, of course, accepted slightly more than 500.
But it is the cell phone that has captured this terrible, fearful, brave face of Baghdad. Western photographers can no longer roam the streets of the Iraqi capital – and few other cities in Iraq – and in south-west Afghanistan, the same phenomenon has occurred.

Three bodies lie beside a Baghdad street on a blindingly hot day. The one on the right is dressed in a white shirt and bright green trousers, his hands tied behind his back. Two others on the left lie shoeless, both dressed in check shirts, dumped – how easily we use that word of Baghdad’s corpses – on a yard of dirt and bags of garbage. They, too, of course, are now garbage. The wall behind them, a grim barrier of dun-coloured brick, seals off this horror from two two-storey villas and a clutch of palm trees, the normal life of Baghdad just a wall away from the other “normal” life of Baghdad’s sectarian killings. No one knows whose bodies they are and the picture – taken from a car window – was snapped in fear by an unknown Iraqi.
It is a cell-phone picture, for now only the cell phones of the Iraqi people can record their tragedy. Another shows a young man’s body, taken from beside a car wing mirror, hands tied behind his back with his own shirt. Bombs explode across the Baghdad skyline, columns of smoke move into the air like sinister ghosts. Palm trees block off streets of fearful Iraqis. A car bomb blazes, the faint image of a US Humvee outlined against the trees. There are broken bridges, wounded friends, blood-soaked cloth.

افادت مصادر أمنية، أن 15 شخصا قتلوا وأصيب 47 آخرون بجروح، فيما اعتقلت القوات الأمنية 62 شخصا، في اطار اعمال عنف وقعت في مناطق متفرقة من العراق من الساعة الثانية ظهرا وحتى الساعة العاشرة من مساء الاثنين، لترتفع حصيلة اعمال العنف الى 17 قتيلا و64 جريحا و135 معتقلا خلال الـ24 ساعة الماضية في عموم ارجاء العراق.

أفادت مصادر أمنية أن شخصين قتلا بينهم شرطي وأصيب 17 آخرون بجروح، فيما اعتقلت القوات الأمنية 73 شخصا في إطار أعمال عنف وقعت في مناطق متفرقة من العراق من الساعة التاسعة مساء أمس الاحد وحتى عصر اليوم الاثنين.
العراق یبدي اهتماما کبیرا بعقد صفقات شراء للاسلحة البلغاریة
كشف وزیر الدولة لشؤون الامن الوطني شيروان الوائلي ان الفترة المقبلة ستشهد تفعیلا ملموسا وتوسیعا للتعاون العسکري والامني بین العراق وبلغاریا. جاء ذلك خلال الزيارة التي یقوم بها الوائلي حالیا لبلغاریا للمشارکة بافتتاح المعرض البلغاري الدولي الثامن للتقنیة العسکریة بمدینة بلوفدیف بعد مباحثات اجراها مع وزیر الداخلیة البلغاري میخائیل میکوف وبعد تفقده اجنحة المعرض وزیارته لمصنع ارسینال للانتاج الحربي. وقال ان العراق یبدي اهتماما کبیرا بعقد صفقات شراء للاسلحة البلغاریة لقوات الشرطة والجیش العراقي. واضاف انه فور عودته للعراق سوف یقترح على الحکومة العراقیة ان تبدأ باتخاذ الاجراءات لابرام الصفقة خصوصا وان العراق منفتح الآن على اعادة التسلح وتدریب عناصره العسکریة والامنیة في الدول الاعضاء بحلف شمال الاطلسي الناتو وبلغاریا فی مقدمها.
English Summary — the toll of violence in Irak between 21:00 hours June 1st 2008 and 22:00 hours June 2nd 2008 is:
- In the period between 21:00 hours yesterday and 12:00 hours today two people, one of them a GZG policeman, had been killed, 17 people were wounded, and 73 people detained in the violence in Irak.
- By 22:00 hours today June 6th 2008, a further 15 had been killed, 47 wounded and 62 people had been detained. Bringing the totals for today to:
- 17 People killed.
- 64 People wounded.
- 135 People detained.
Of particular sadness to us is that the UNHCR/Red Crescent clinic (pictured below) in Amman, Jordan, which serves the increasingly impoverished refugee population there has had to curtail its hours because it is running out of money.
The coverage of potential weapons deals with France is overshadowing a far more sinister development. The GZG deputy defense minister is in Plovdiv Bulgaria. He is hoping to set up an arms deal with the Bulgarians.
The GZG are announcing another major plan to provide electricity. We will believe it when we see it.
تقليص ساعات عمل العيادات الطبية التابعة لمفوضية اللاجئين في الاردن
قلصت العيادات الطبية التابعة للمفوضية السامية لشؤون اللاجئين في الاردن ساعات عملها لوجود عجز مالي لديها. وقالت مصادر اعلامية انه جراء التقليص فقد اشتدت معاناة العراقيين المقيمين في الاردن . ونقلت المصادر عن مواطنين عراقيين يقيمون هناك قولهم ان الصعوبات في الحصول على علاج طبي او اي خدمات صحية في الآونة الأخيرة من العيادات الطبية التابعة للمفوضية قد تفاقمت بسبب اغلاق عدد من تلك العيادات . ومن جانبه نفى منسق العيادات الطبية التابعة للمفوضية السامية لشؤون اللاجئين في الاردن انطوان حلاق اقوال العراقيين بشأن إغلاق العيادات التابعة للمفوضية ، مؤكدا بان تلك العيادات قلّلت من ساعات دوامها لاستقبال المرضى بسبب العجز المالي ولم يتم اغلاقها.
اعتماد خطة لتوفير الطاقة الكهربائية في العراق بشكل شبه مستقر
اكد وزير الكهرباء كريم وحيد في مؤتمر صحفي امس الاحد ان وزارته اعتمدت خطة لتوفير الطاقة الكهربائية في البلاد بشكل شبه مستقر خلال السنوات الثلاثة المقبلة تتضمن انشاء محطات توليد وتوفر الاموال المرصودة. وكشف الوزير الذي كثرت الانتقادات ضده في الاونة الاخيرة لاخفاق وزارته في تجهيز المواطنين بالطاقة ، عن الخطط التي تنتهجها الوزارة للتعاقد مع شركات أجنبية بهدف نصب محطات ضخمة لتوليد الطاقة الكهربائية في البلاد اضافة الى تخصيص الميزانية الفائضة من العام الماضي نتيجة عدم تنفيذ المشاريع بسبب الوضع الأمني، إضافة إلى الميزانية المخصصة للوزارة خلال العام الحالي. وأشار الى ان رئيس الوزراء نوري المالكي أعرب عن استعداده لتوفير مبالغ كافية للعقد الذي أبرمته الوزارة مع شركة أمريكية لنصب محطات توليد الطاقة الكهربائية بسعة 12 الف ميكا واط. وقال إن” الحاجة إلى الكهرباء زادت من ستة ألاف إلى أكثر من عشرة ألاف ميكا واط خلال العامين الماضيين في مقابل تدني الإنتاج”.

تلبية لنداء راديو دجلة الهلال الاحمر تساعد امرأة عراقية

قامت هيئة الهلال الاحمر العراقي بمساعدة المواطنة شكرية مهدي عبد من اهالي بغداد وذلك تلبية لنداء وجهه راديو دجلة الى الهيئة . وبادر مسؤولو الهلال الاحمر الى اجراء فحوصات كاملة لها وزودوها بالعلاج اللازم كما تم منحها كرسيا متحركا يعينها على الحركة حيث تعاني المواطنة من حالة شلل. ويشكر راديو دجلة الاستجابات المتكررة من قبل الهلال الاحمر العراقي لتلبته نداءات اذاعتنا التي تخص تقديم المساعدة الطبية للمحتاجين اليها من ابناء الشعب العراقي الذين يعمدون الى طرح معاناتهم عبر اثير دجلة لمن يعنيهم الامر.
