The Ninewa governor warned on Saturday that he may dissolve municipal councils that run counter, thereby forming another provincial council in Ninewa apart from the legitimate one.

Atheel al-Nujaifi was reacting to statements by the Fraternal Ninewa list, which said it was considering the issue of forming “a council to run 16 municipal units” in the province.

“There are no constitutional or legal basis for such plans,“ Governor Nujaifi told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

“According to the constitution and law, we can dissolve current municipal councils and form new ones in suburbs and districts,” he said.

“We do not want things to reach this point. The Fraternal Ninewa list can get the rights they demand through the Iraqi constitution and law,“ he added.

On Monday (July 13), Durman Suleiman Khotari, a Kurdish member of the Ninewa provincial council, said that their list was seriously considering a suggestion to “form a council to run 16 municipal units” that decided by late April 2009 to boycott the Ninewa provincial council, protesting and claiming that their list has not been offered any important positions in Ninewa.

On June 13, the Sadrist Movement, embarking on an initiative to end a political crisis in Ninewa, delegated lawmaker Bahaa al-Aaraji to the province to mediate between the two sides.

Mosul, the capital city of Ninewa province, lies 405 km north of Baghdad.
