340 and rising
The total of confirmed Cholera cases in Irak as of September 27th 2008 has risen to 340 according to the GZG Health Ministry. Most of the cases are in Babil. It is worth noting that in recent years the typical number of confirmed cases in Irak is 30.
It is worth noting that Irak had almost entirely eradicated the disease for many years. Cholera returned as a health issue in 1991 as a result of the international sanctions and embargo imposed on Irak. The situation deteriorated further, and drastically, following the overthrow of the previous regime.
