Sahar al-Haydari…a year after departure!
The Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI) editorial staff is commemorating reporter Sahar al-Haydari on the first anniversary of her assassination by an unidentified armed group in al-Hadbaa neighborhood, northern Mosul.
Haydari, one of the earliest correspondents who started working for VOI on November 1, 2004, has been a zealous bee, covering incidents in her province – Ninewa, 405 km north of Iraq – on the spot in spite of all the security risks involved.
Born in 1962 and a carrier of a bachelor’s degree in mass communication, Haydari lived in Mosul since the 1980s and worked for a number of Iraqi media organizations.
Haydari, who mothers four girl children, was the third journalist to be missed by VOI in a matter of two weeks in mid-2007.
She was gunned down one week after the assassination of Nizar al-Radi, the VOI correspondent in Missan province, and one week before the death of Aref Ali, the Diala correspondent, who was killed when an explosive charge went off near a public vehicle carrying him along with other civilians.
Haydari’s name was on a list of journalists receiving death threats from the amir (leader) of the so-called group Islamic State in Mosul.
