I heard on NPR that Muqtada al Sadr is “In Iran, studying to be ‘elevated’ in Muslim circles”/whatever – they MAY have said “to Ayatollah status.” Can this possibly be true?!!

    THANKS!!!

Of course it can be true – scholars from all over the world go to Qum all the time to further their studies just as they travel to Najaf. Why should that be surprising? Both are world famous centres of Islamic studies. Ayatollahs do not just “happen” they have to undertake many years of rigorous training and pass difficult examinations.

THANKS Haleema, and I believe you – last sentence especially, and never meant to suggest otherwise; I’m just ignorant about this – the reason I asked is that folks poo-poo’d this on my favorite, the Arkansas Blog, and said this was not fact but US media propaganda intended to continue the (true enough) making of Iran the next US “bogeyman.” Also that al Sadr was such a dedicated Iraqi national he would NOT do this…

Have Googled, etc. and find NO reference to this – are there any that you are aware of? The NPR report also indicated that he had been there “for some time.” I found this highly plausible, but then others said NO WAY!

Sadr is a nationalist – in fact of the major “Shia” parties he is the only one who is a nationalist. How do I explain this?

Our clergy are not priests they are lawyers in the same way that Jewish Rabbis are lawyers and not priests. Also there is no such thing as separation of religion and politics in Islam. Religion is politics and politics is religion. Our faith is an inherently political one in the sense that the health of our community what we call the Ummah is judged by how closely it adheres to Islam.

So each clergyman is a follower/member of a school of jurisprudence, of Islamic law – the Shariah. To give an example from this site our young colleague Mohammed Ibn Laith will when he completes his studies be a Judge of the Shariah.

To make a very broad statement Najaf is the centre for scholars tending to the traditional “quietist” school and Qum is the centre for scholars tending to the more “activist” school.

Al-Sadr is of the “activist” school (I am not happy with that word but it will have to do). So it would be perfectly reasonable for him to go to Iran. As a general point a good/thorough scholar will often study at various “schools” to broaden and deepen his knowledge.

IF he is elevated to the rank of Ayatollah his political power would increase greatly.

It is also perfectly reasonable for a man who has escaped assasination many times to leave Irak for the relative safety of Iran. Clergy from each country have sought refuge in their neighbouring for centuries. It is also perfectly reasonable for an Iraki nationalist to realise that the Americans will be gone once they are worn down enough but Iran will always be our neighbour.

None of that means that Americans working for the occupation would not put their own interpretation on his alleged whereabouts for their own motives. But the idea that Iran “backs” al-Sadr which is what your friends are I think addressing is ludicrous. They are right about that – that he is being painted as some sort of Iranian agent/puppet/sympathiser is simply too stupid for words to anyone who knows even a little of his history. Iran backs Dawa (al-Maliki’s party) and SIIC (al-Hakim’s party) they are interested in not having al-Sadr as an enemy which is very different from supporting him.

Myself I think it more than highly probable that somewhere in Iran is where he is right now.

Haleema, THANK YOU so very much for this enlightening information!!! On the contrary they were not suggesting Iran “backs” al Sadr, and were much more knowledgeable than I about this as relates to Iran…

Here is my “oversimplified” (for the average American voter) of the Iraq occupation:

ALL you really have to grasp to understand this Iraq mess is ANY image of US troops kicking down doors, SWAT-ing down city streets, etc., etc. OR “the landscape” in general.

THEN ask yourself: If I got up each morning to see mostly this stuff in MY COUNTRY, what would be the most logical conclusion of “everyman?”
