Not One Left
Today in Basrah Khalid Nasir al Miyahi was buried. He was kidnapped as he made his way home from his post at Sadr Educational Hospital yesterday Sunday March 9th 2008.
The photo to the right is his funeral. If you read the report from Aswat Al Iraq to the right you will see that it says that his body was dumped at the side of the road just south of the city.
العثور على جثة طبيب مختطف في البصرة
قال شهود عيان أنه عثر، الأثنين، على جثة طبيب أختطف، مساء الأحد، وسط مدينة البصرة بعد نهاية الدوام الرسمي وهو في طريقه الى منزله من قبل مسلحين مجهولين.
وأوضح شهود عيان من أقارب القتيل أنه تم العثور على جثة الطبيب خالد ناصر مرمية على قارعة أحد الطرق جنوبي مدينة البصرة.
وأضاف الشهود أن مجموعة مسلحة كانت قد أختطفت الطبيب الذي يعمل اختصاصيا بالجملة العصبية في مستشفى الصدر التعليمي بعد نهاية دوامه الرسمي، مساء الأحد، وهو في طريقه إلى منزله.
وأشار الشهود إلى أن الطبيب القتيل يعمل ايضا في دائرة الطب العدلي في البصرة.
وتستهدف جماعات مسلحة الكفاءات العلمية من مختلف الأختصاصات مثل الأطباء واساتذة الجامعات والمهندسين وغيرهم وقتل العشرات منهم عبر الاربع سنوات الماضية.
وأعتصم الأطباء والصيادلة قبل حوالي الاربعة أشهر مطالبين الحكومة بتوفير الحماية لهم وتعهدت الحكومة المحلية وقتها بالإستجابة لمثل هذه المطالب.
وتركت المئات من الكفاءات العلمية المدينة وغادرت إلى خارج العراق أو مدن أخرى خوفا من القتل والتصفيات والتهديد.
وتقع مدينة البصرة، مركز محافظة البصرة، على مسافة 590 كم جنوب العاصمة بغداد.
It also says why he was murdered:
وأشار الشهود إلى أن الطبيب القتيل يعمل ايضا في دائرة الطب العدلي في البصرة.
Witnesses referred to the fact that the dead doctor dead also worked in the forensic department in Basra.
In other words he did autopsies.
It then goes on to point out that there has been a concerted assassination campaign in the last four years by the various armed groups against doctors, lecturers, engineers, qualified people in general and that four months ago the Doctors and Pharmacists in Basrah held a strike demanding protection from the local authorities and that the local authorities swore they would provide it:

I remember that strike it was after yet another murder in the series of murders going on of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and ambulance drivers in Basrah and its surrounding area.
I remember too how the local authorities did not provide the protection that they said they would provide.
I used to work with Khalid, he was a good doctor and a good man.
I will miss Khalid.
Khalid was the last Neurologist left in Basrah.

Yes Katharine it is indeed very sad and very frightening for all of us. I simply do not know how long the remnants of our health system that somehow still survive will continue to do so.
