Escalating crisis: Iraqis reach the end of the road at the Turkish borders.
This is the end of the road for Emanuel Yousif. He escaped from northern Iraqi Kurdistan when Saddam Hussain forces destroyed his village in 1976 and fled from Baghdad to Mosul after the US forces invaded Iraq only to flee again when violence in the City escalated after 2006. Now, Yousif (56 years old), is one of 50 man, women and children who are stuck in a village which lies a few hundreds meters from a river that cuts mountainous valleys by its crystal clear waters separating Iraq from Turkey. At the same time as Turkish forces stationed at the top of an adjacent hill were shelling the neighboring valley hill, Yousif said: "I have reached the end of the road, I have no other place I can go to". At the same time the Turkish Foreign Minster Ali

Babajan was  meeting his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zibari to find a diplomatic solution to the crisis facing the two countries, the Turkish Parliament passed a motion last week to allow the Army to cross the borders to chase PKK rebels who intensified their attacks on Turkish soldiers this year. Washington called upon Baghdad and Ankara to refrain from choosing the military option fearing that such an invasion would destabilize this region, which has not seen the daily violence that the rest of Iraq is facing and is witnessing an economical  boom. The villagers in Dishtanakh say that they have tolerated air and land bombardments on their village and that some 150 persons moved to the Iraqi towns of Zakho and Duhoke. On the road to the village there were 2 small craters surrounded by a the frightening silence of the valley. Above, two fighters appeared on the horizon leaving behind them white lines in the blue sky and tilting slightly before they disappeared behind the distant mountains. And over a hill across the river, a Turkish tank appeared directing its barrel towards the valley at a time a Turkish flag had been planted on the side of the mountain. There was nothing to indicate that there were Kurdish soldiers in the valley leading to Deshtanakh with the exception of two people crossing a field and another two climbing the rocky lands and a donkey carrying vital supplies to the villagers which is situated 90 Km from Duhoke over tortuous mountain passages surrounded by magnificent sceneries .

The international efforts must seek to avoid another confrontation, Gorial Wida, 56 years old said ‘There is a continuous shelling and we don’t want anybody to take away our rights or terrorize us. We call upon the UN, Human Right Watch, the Kurdish Government  and the Iraqi Government to solve the crisis diplomatically and upon Turkey to stop threatening the people". He added: "the security situation in Iraq as whole is bad and therefore, we came here after we had no other place to go to". In the village Iraqi Catholics live and it has been rebuilt by the local Kurdistan Government over the past 2 years. In the vicinity a new church emerges awaiting its vicars.  A few kilometers before the border there is a new village which has 24 houses painted in various colours but different bright colours without any residents. In a nearby field there is a 28 years old young man called Fedhl Salem. he used to live with his parents and his 7 siblings. The whole family migrated to Zakho running away from the bombardment but Fedhl returned to look after the farm. The crops ranged from peach trees, tomatoes, melons and pomegranate s. The residents of the village all agreed that they hadn’t seen any fighter from the PKK in the area and the shelling is aimed to terrorize them to push them to leave their houses. Yousif said "the problem is between the PKK and Turkey.. so why do they destroy the peace here; it is a Turkish problem and we have nothing to do with it". Some villagers complained they were unhappy in living in the large towns and in addition, they cannot afford the high rents in these towns. Wida said’ this is my land and I will not leave it whatever in any circumstances, not for Turkey and not for anyone else even if we are all killed.
