GENEVA, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned Iraq’s neighbours to boost their defences against cholera, which has struck at least 3,315 people in Iraq.
The virulent disease is “continuing to spread across Iraq and dissemination to as yet unaffected areas remains highly possible”, the WHO said in a statement.
The U.N. health agency said it did not recommend any travel or trade restrictions on affected areas in Iraq. “However, neighbouring countries are encouraged to reinforce their active surveillance and preparedness systems,” it said.
Iraq shares borders with Iran, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Claire-Lise Chaignat, the WHO’s global cholera coordinator, said the bacteria could be carried by Iraqi refugees and pilgrims, as well as by normal commercial trade, but there was no reason to close borders.
“We are particularly worried about countries with Iraqi refugees where they don’t always have access to good water and sanitation and hygienic conditions,” she told Reuters.
Iraq’s Health Ministry said on Monday that 15 people had died of cholera since the outbreak began in mid-August.
The number of deaths from the disease has “remained low throughout the outbreak indicating that those who have become sick have been able to access adequate treatment on time”, the WHO said.
Cholera is characterised by a sudden onset of acute watery diarrhoea that in severe cases can cause death by dehydration and kidney failure within hours. It is transmitted mainly through contaminated water and food.
The overall quality of water and sanitation in Iraq is “very poor”, which greatly facilitates cholera contamination, according to the WHO. The agency is in the process of buying 5 million water treatment tablets to purify water supplies.
A first cholera case has been confirmed in Wasit province in the Iraqi southeast and an increasing number of patients with acute watery diarrhoea had been reported in Diala, near Baghdad, the WHO said.
The prevalence of cholera has stabilised in Basra, Baghdad, Dahuk, Mosul and Tikrit, it added. The majority of cases have been in the north, with 2,300 reported in Kirkuk and 870 in Sulaimaniya.

بغداد (رويترز) - حذرت منظمة الصحة العالمية الدول المجاورة للعراق وطلبت منها تعزيز دفاعاتها ضد مرض الكوليرا الذي أصاب 3315 شخصا على الاقل في العراق.
وقالت المنظمة في بيان إن المرض “يواصل انتشاره في شتى انحاء العراق وان امتداده الى المناطق التي لم تتضرر بعد محتمل بدرجة كبيرة.”
وذكرت المنظمة انها لا توصي بفرض حظر على السفر وقيود تجارية في المناطق المتضررة “لكن نشجع الدول المجاورة على تشديد عمليات المراقبة النشطة وانظمة الاستعداد.”
وللعراق حدود مع كل من ايران وتركيا وسوريا والاردن والكويت والمملكة العربية السعودية.
وقالت كلير ليس شيون منسقة منظمة الصحة لمكافحة الكوليرا على مستوى العالم ان المرض يمكنه ان ينتقل من خلال اللاجئين العراقيين وزوار الاماكن المقدسة في العراق وأيضا من خلال التجارة المعتادة لكن ما من داع لاغلاق الحدود.
وقالت لرويترز “نحن قلقون بشكل خاص على دول بها لاجئين عراقيين حيث لا تتوفر لهم عادة مياه صالحة وظروف صحية.”
وأعلنت وزارة الصحة العراقية يوم الاثنين ان 15 شخصا ماتوا من الكوليرا منذ انتشار المرض في منتصف اغسطس آب.
وقالت وزارة الصحة يوم الاثنين ان اكثر من 500 حالة اصابة جديدة بالكوليرا تأكدت منذ يوم الخميس في محافظة كركوك بشمال العراق مما رفع العدد الكلي لحالات الاصابة في انحاءالبلاد الى اكثر من ثلاثة آلاف.
وقالت متحدثة باسم الوزارة إن 15 شخصا لاقوا حتفهم بسبب المرض لكن عدد الوفيات القليل نسبيا يوضح ان التفشي تحت السيطرة بالرغم من الزيادة الحادة في عدد حالات الاصابة المؤكدة.
ومن جانبها قالت منظمة الصحة العالمية ان عدد الوفيات بسبب المرض “ظلت منخفضة…مما يشير الى ان المرضى حصلوا على العلاج المناسب في الوقت المناسب.”
ومن أعراض الكوليرا الاسهال الحاد الذي يؤدي في الحالات الحرجة الى الوفاة خلال ساعات نتيجة الجفاف والاصابة بفشل كلوي. وينتقل المرض عادة من خلال المياه الملوثة والطعام الملوث.
وقالت منظمة الصحة العالمية إن مستوى جودة المياه والصحة في العراق “ضعيف جدا” مما يسهل انتقال العدوى. وتعمل المنظمة على شراء خمسة ملايين قرص من أقراص معالجة المياه لتنقية امدادات المياه.
وأضافت المنظمة انه اكتشفت أول حالة اصابة مؤكدة بالكوليرا في محافظة واسط بجنوب شرق العراق كما عانى عدد متزايد من المرضى من الاسهال الحاد في ديالى قرب بغداد.
وذكرت أن الكوليرا منتشرة في البصرة وبغداد ودهوك والموصل وتكريت.
وكانت أغلبية حالات الاصابة في شمال العراق حيث بلغ عدد المصابين في محافظة كركوك 2300 و870 في السليمانية المجاورة
