Cholera Update September 25th 2007
Summary:
- WHO today stated that a Cholera case has been confirmed in Dahuk (Dohuk) governorate.
- Since it was detected in late August the outbreak has spread to 25 districts of Northern Irak and 4 districts in the Southern and Central governorates.
- WHO estimate that more than 30 000 people have fallen ill with acute watery diarrhoea, among which 2 116 were identified as positive for Vibrio cholerae.
- The case fatality rate is 0.52% and has remained low throughout the outbreak.
- The outbreak continues to spread across country WHO consider dissemination to as yet unaffected areas highly possible.
Confirmed Cases In Rest of Irak:
Additional isolated cases of Cholera have been identified in other parts of the country:
- Baghdad: Baghdad — 2 cases confirmed.
- Basrah: Basra — 1 case confirmed.
- Dahuk: Dahuk — 1 case confirmed. (This is the first case in this governorate.)
- Ninawa: Mosul — 2 cases confirmed.
- Salah Ad Din: Tikrit — 6 cases confirmed.
