Overview:

As of 27th of September 2007, 26 districts of Northern Iraq and 7 districts in the south and center have reported 2758 laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera.

  • 13 out of the 14 districts of Sulaymaniyah governorate.
  • All five districts of Kirkuk governorate
  • All seven districts of Arbil governorate
  • One district in Dahuk
  • 3 districts in (Salah Ad Din) Tikrit
  • One district in Ninawa (Mosul),
  • One district in Baghdad
  • One district in Basrah
  • One district in Wasit

are now affected by this cholera outbreak. This represents an increase of 295 laboratory confirmed cases since the last situation report. 14 deaths have now been reported an increase of 3 since the last situation report.

  • 95% of cases reported nationally were reported from Sulaimaniyah and Kirkuk the vast majority of these from Kirkuk and Sulaimaniyah cities - the governorate capitals. The out break seems to be slowly spreading to the neighboring provinces of Arbil which has 106 confirmed cases and Diyala which has 22 cases diagnosed on clinical grounds.
  • There appears to be a developing upward trend in Sulaymaniyah governorate.
  • One of the important features in this out break is that most of the cases seen have mild to moderate signs
and symptoms. The traditional signs and symptoms of severe dehydrating diarrhea were seen only very
occasionally, out of the 2758 lab confirmed cases; only 14 death were reported, most the deceased have
    another serious underlying cause.
  • Normally reliable sources are reporting a death from Cholera in Al Anbar (Hit) because of reporting lags this is unlikely to show in WHO for some time.
  • Apart from the affected governorates there is no sign that the disease has spread to any other part of Irak. However, as the weather cools and become more favorable for transmission, the organism is expected to spread.

IRAQ: Closure of Iranian border affects Kurdistan region’s economy

Editors » 30 September 2007 » In Iraq, Middle East » No Comments

SULAIMANIYAH, 30 September 2007 (IRIN) - Aid agencies in the northern semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan have said the continuing closure of Iraq’s border with Iran will not hamper their work as they do not use the Iranian border for getting supplies.

However, Azad Ahmed, a 45-year old pharmacist in Sulaimaniyah, said that although medicines are imported from neighbouring countries other than Iran some critical items do come from Iran as well.

“There are a lot of items which come from Turkey, Jordan and Syria but we have some important medical items which are imported from Iran such as painkillers, syringes, cough syrup and optic medicines,” Ahmed said.

“We have not seen any shortages so far as stores are still well stocked, but I think if this situation [the border closure] continues for another month, then we’ll see acute shortages,” Ahmed added.
On 24 September Iran closed five border crossings with northeastern Iraq to protest against the US detention of an Iranian official whom the US military accused of weapons smuggling. Other Iran-Iraq border crossings are still open.

Anbar - Voices of Iraq

Sunday , 30 /09 /2007  Time 10:32:55

Baghdad, Sept 30, (VOI) - A death from Cholera was disclosed on Sunday by health authorities in the western Iraqi province of Anbar.

“A five-year-old child died of Cholera on Saturday in Hit Public Hospital of Anbar province,” Dr. Ahmed al-Hiti from Hit hospital told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).

Al-Hiti added “this is the first death resulting from the epidemic in Anbar province.”

Hit town is located to the west of Ramadi, capital city of Anbar, which lies at 110 km west of Baghdad.
The total deaths from Cholera in Iraq so far is 13, including nine in Sulaimaniya, one in Kirkuk, one in Ninewa, one in Baghdad and one in Anbar according to statistics released by Iraqi medical authorities.

On Wednesday, Iraqi health undersecretary Dr. Amer al-Khuzaei said that the confirmed Cholera cases all over Iraq have reached 2,277, 1,514 of them registered in Kirkuk, 659 in Sulaimaniya, 96 in Arbil, 4 in Salah al-Din, 2 in Ninewa, one in Baghdad, and one in Basra.
The first Cholera case was detected in northern Iraq in mid-August.

Contaminated water sources have been blamed for the incidence of cholera, a waterborne disease which starts with acute diarrhea and can lead to death in just a few hours from severe dehydration and kidney failure.

I hate all Iranians, US aide tells MPs

By SIMON WALTERS - Last updated at 21:26pm on 29th September 2007

British MPs visiting the Pentagon to discuss America’s stance on Iran and Iraq were shocked to be told by one of President Bush’s senior women officials: “I hate all Iranians.”

And she also accused Britain of “dismantling” the Anglo-US-led coalition in Iraq by pulling troops out of Basra too soon.

The all-party group of MPs say Debra Cagan, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Coalition Affairs to Defence Secretary Robert Gates, made the comments this month.
