Sometimes I just Hold My Head In My Hands
The “Iraq Without Violence Network” have released their report on Monday on violence against civilians in Irak during the first five months of this year. The report makes for grim reading.
The network issued a report earlier this year detailing violence against civilians in Irak during 2006. That report recorded 12028 violent incidents against civilians with the number of victims as follows:
- Civilians killed 47748
- Civilians severely wounded 57122
- Families forced to flee their homes 211268
Their second report deals with violence against civilians in the first five months of 2007. The report says that of the 9,352 civilians killed 45% were killed by militias and terrorist groups, 34% per cent by foreign troops and 12% by Iraqi green zone government security forces.
Iraq Without Violence are an umbrella group of Iraki civilian civil society organisations. Their 125 member organisations have rapporteurs throughout Irak.
Summary Part 1 - Headings and Gross Totals:
Since January 1st 2007 observers deployed in all the Governorates of Iraq who are members of the network monitored for in the period 13193 violent incidents under the following heading:
- Killings
- Threats
- Suicide operations
- Armed attacks
- Kidnappings
- Destruction of property and premises
- Incidents involving armed groups and forces and multinational occupation forces Iraqi against civilians.
The number of civilian fatalities during the past six months reported by group is 9352
- 5493 men
- 2194 women
- 1665 children.
Of the 15809 civilians seriously wounded in violent incidents during this five month reporting period the breakdown is as follows:
- 9362 men
- 4583 women
- 1864 children.
The highest number of violent incidents was in Baghdad, where the observers recorded 3714 incidents involving civilians. The figures (which are incomplete) record 2108 murders, and 3963 severe woundings.

The four most violent governorates ranked by number of incidents were:
- Baghdad
- Diyala
- Anbar
- Basrah
Summary Part 3 - Population Displacement (Refugees)
11763 families were forced to abandoned their homes in the first 5 months of 2007 because of the violence taking place in the Iraki governorates.
Baghdad
The report gives the following figures for incidents in Baghdad recorded by observers:
- Total recorded violent incidents against civilians 3714
- 2108 case of murder of civilians.
- Severe wounding were 3963.

Al Anbar Governorate

Arbil Governorate
Arbil had 86 incidents ob violence against civilians in which the numbers killed were 98 and wounded 124.
At-Ta’mim (Kirkuk) Governorate
Kirkuk scored 773 cases of violence in which 517 civilians were killed 751 civilians were wounded.
Babil Governorate
The 614 case of violence recorded claimed the lives of 653 civilians and 694 were severely wounded.
Basra Governorate

Dahuk Governorate
Dohuk had 79 incidents in which the number of civilians killed was 54 and wounded 78.
Dhi Qar Governorate
4141 violent incidents were recorded which caused the death of 298 civilians and wounded 493.
Diyala Governorate

Karbala Governorate
Observers registered 218 violent incidents causing 292 deaths 459 severe injuries.

Maysan recorded 183 violent incidents that caused 273 civilian deaths and left 268 civilians critically injured.
Muthanna Governorate
In Muthanna 221 violent incidents killed 257 and wounded 448.
Najaf Governorate

Ninawa Governorate
Figures are incomplete and are for Mosul only.
Mosul:
538 violent incidents caused the death of 711 civilians and wounded 832.
Qadisiyyah Governorate

Diwaniyah:
472 recorded incidents that left 324 wounded and 536 dead.

Salah al Din Governorate

The Salah Al-Din governorate participating civil organisations verified 316 violent incidents which caused 384 civilian deaths and 673 civilians injured.
Sulaimaniyah Governorate
Sulaimaniyah registered 68 incidents in which the numbers of civilian killed and wounded were 42 and 64 respectively.
Wasit Governorate
In Wasit 264 violent incidents claimed the lives of 386 and injured 546.
