“What’s an Iraqi Life Worth?”

“A particular point to note is no money is paid to Iraqi’s killed by insurgents. This was, to me at any rate one of the first indisputable indications that a cover up in Haditha had been attempted by the local commanders. The payments are made solely as a result of US actions and are made at the discretion of the local commander. In Haditha the US army first claimed that the 24 in Haditha had been killed by insurgents and then paid them. Clearly a HUGE discrepency between policy and what was done. The question immediately arose in my mind as to why the money was paid. The only reasonable explanation is as “hush money.”.
Well you’re dead on Declan - we’re only throwing money (a mere pittance I might add) is because we got caught!
We know that mark is planning on writing more on this he’s been sent all the stories as he’s written twice about the Samarra hospital shooting now.
But hes travelling so this is really an “expect more” later kind of thing
Ah yes but of course that is the AMERICAN version Iraqis say it a little differently “The only things these Americans understand is force and Iraqis introduce them to it regularly.”
Or perhaps you prefer this classic “every now and again the Iraqi resistance has to pick up a crappy little American invader and throw it against a wall just to prove we are serious.”
After the americans and their english dogs have run away we will have to write it again “every now and again the Iraqi people has to pick up a crappy little Iraqi colaboraiter and throw it against a wall just to prove we are serious.”
